The publications submitted to the Jagiellonian University Press are verified regarding the publishing ethics standards accordingly to the publisher’s best knowledge and tools available.
Duties of the Publisher:
- Obeying the publishing standards. Keeping to the code of ethics in publishing, and counteracting unfair publishing practices;
- Objective and substantive evaluation of the texts based on the assessments provided in peer reviews. The main criteria for evaluation of publications are: scientific value, originality of the approach, and clarity of the argument;
- Confidentiality. The publisher does not disclose to unauthorized persons any information about the works submitted for publication;
- Prevention of conflicts of interest between authors, editors, and translators.
Duties of Scientific Editor:
- Decision on the publication of a work. The main criteria for accepting texts for publication are: scientific value, originality of the approach, and clarity of the argument;
- Scientific reliability of published works. In case of suspected unfair practices (plagiarism, falsification of research results), the scientific editor should withdraw the text from the multi-authored publication;
- Providing the co-authors’ approval for the changes resulting from the scientific editing.
The publisher and scientific editor have the right to withdraw a published work, if:
- there is an evidence of research results unreliability and/or data falsification, as well as in the event of unintentional errors (e.g., methodological errors, calculation errors);
- the work contains suspected plagiarism or violates the principles of editorial ethics.
Duties of Author:
- Providing a reliable description of the original research work;
- Enabling identification of works cited and sources of data (before and after the publication of their work)
- Acquiring all third party rights for the materials such as illustrations, tables, graphs, quotations, etc. to be included in the publication;
- Authors submitting joint texts for publication are required to disclose the contribution of each author and counteract potential practices which could be in breach with the codes of conduct;
- The author is obliged to include in the bibliography the publications used to create the text;
- The author is obliged to immediately correct of all factual errors in the text, indicated by the editor at every stage of the publishing process or discovered by the author after the publication of the work.
Duties of Reviewer:
- Providing an information that they do not have a conflict of interest with the author;
- Providing a review within the set deadline. The reviewer is obliged to immediately notify the publisher of any difficulties in meeting the deadline;
- Confidentiality. All manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with unauthorized persons;
- The reviewer is required to provide an objective assessment of the submitted work supported by appropriate argumentation. The personal criticism of the author of the work is considered at least inappropriate;
- Immediate reporting to the publisher any fragments of the text which are suspected of scientific misconduct and/or plagiarism.
Duties of the Translator:
- Using their best knowledge and skills to ensure the highest quality of translation;
- Providing a translation within the set deadline. The translator is obliged to immediately notify the publisher of any difficulties in meeting the deadline;
- In the case of translating another edition of a publication, the translator should ensure that the existing translation is not plagiarized.
- Making sure that the translation does not infringe any third party rights to the materials contained in the text.
The Publisher is committed to counteract unacceptable publishing practices, with particular emphasis on:
- duplicate publication,
- plagiarism;
- fabrication of data;
- ghost-writing;
- guest authorship.
