On the Unicorn, the Cenacle and Other More or Less Important Motifs
Essays on the history of culture
For a historian of culture, tracing the history of the meanings of various motifs, symbols, signs etc. is a fascinating adventure. Traditionally, none of the senses which had once been assigned to each of these motifs, ever disappears from the memory of culture. The role of a researcher and scholar is to trace the history of the individual motifs or topoi in different contexts, and to analyze the ways in which they are interpreted and used. It is worth realizing that something which today is no more than a banal gadget, at one time was associated with important questions relating to the world and man.
