This book is about a speech disorder – dysarthria – in adults. Several elements of speech are discussed in the book, including phonetics, intonation and accent, speech tempo, fluency of speech, articulation, and any defects of the aforementioned elements resulting from dysarthria.
Differences between aphasia, (which concerns all levels of speech, but these are another modification than in the instance of dysarthria) and dysarthria (which deals with the sphere of implemented speech and has a different character than that found in aphasia) discussed in detail.
Dysarthria is shown to be a separate speech disorder. The classifications of dysarthria, according to Darley’s classifications are demonstrated, and a DVD is included with the book, which has recordings of several types of dysarthria in neurological diseases. There is also a description of a new method of diagnosis of dysarthria, the “Evaluation of the State of Dysarthria” (ESD) by I. Gatkowska, and the DVD also presents diagnostic research conducted according to this new method.
This book is recommended for those specialists who work with patients suffering from neurological diseases, such as medical doctors, psychologists, and speech therapists.
